13th Five-Year Plan: China vows to lift 55 million people out of poverty

Building a “moderately prosperous society” is the centerpiece of China’s 13th Five-Year Plan. In March, the government announced an ambitious plan to end poverty in five years. This episode of the special series ‘13th Five-Year Plan’ looks at the roadmap of poverty alleviation. Currently, about 55.75 million people, mostly in the countryside, live beneath China’s poverty line, earning less than 2,300 yuan (about 354 US dollars) annually. The government hopes to eradicate all poverty by 2020.
