1st launch countdown at Russia’s new Vostochny cosmodrome

A Russian Soyuz 2.1a rocket carrying Aist-2D, Mikhailo Lomonosov and SamSat-218 research satellites will be launched on 02:01 GMT Wednesday from Russia’s newly built Vostochny Cosmodrome, located in the far eastern Amur region.

The timelapse footage captured on Saturday shows the rocket being rolled out onto the launch pad.

It will be the new spaceport’s first launch after a scheduled launch in December 2015 was postponed due to construction delays.

Vostochny has been under construction since 2012 and is expected to reduce Russia’s dependency on the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan.
