The inspection and quarantine officials in southeast China’s Xiamen city seized 31 giant live spiders smuggled in two small parcels. They were sent from Cameroon, and initially declared as dried beetles.
The spiders, with an average body length of over 11 cm, were packed individually in perforated plastic cups for ventilation and food inside the containers. Preliminary examination identified the spiders as hysterocrates crassipes, a burrowing tarantula species found in Cameroon and often sold as pets.
Fearing they might carry diseases that could potentially endanger ecological environment and human health, the local quarantine department said they’ll have to put down the arachnids.
