3,500 migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean in 2016

The International Organisation for Migration says 3,500 people have drowned so far this year crossing the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe, about 600 more than the same period last year. As of mid-September this year, over 2,700 people have lost their lives while crossing the central Mediterranean route linking North Africa to Italy.
