50 Corporators Off To Andaman Island On STUDY Tour | Exclusive

Around 50 corporators are all set to fly to Andaman and Nicobar islands this week for a ‘study tour’ on public expenses. Though some of those going on the tour defended it, claiming that the purpose was to study how the islands manage their infrastructure, others admitted that it was a ‘picnic’. Fearing a public outcry, some corporators have even backed out at the last moment. Officials involved in the process said since the tour was planned very late, flights and hotel bookings have been done at very high charges and about ?14 lakh would be spent on it. The civic standing committee members who are going on the tour will leave on Thursday while those from other committee members will leave over the next few days. Some claimed that they were going to study water supply techniques and storm water drain system while others gave various reasons. Standing committee chairman and Shiv Sena corporator Yashodhar Phanse said the islands’ conditions are similar to Mumbai and it needs to be known how they manage their infrastructures. “We want to study how they manage their water resources and how they maintain their roads despite receiving more rainfall than Mumbai,” he said, adding that only key leaders of other parties had cancelled the visit and rest were very much going on the tour. SP group leader in BMC Rais Shaikh said, “There is nothing in Andaman to learn. It’s a private tour on public expenses so I will not go.”
