9,000 troops participating in US-Philippines Balikatan drill

The annual Balikatan, or “Shoulder-to-Shoulder” joint military exercises between the Philippines and the United States, is underway in Manila. The drills will run for 12 days to April 15. About 9,000 Filipino and American troops are participating in the drill and US Defense Secretary Ash Carter will also observe the war games. It is the first time a US defense secretary has overseen the exercises in person since they were established more than 30 years ago.
