Afghan government, dissident group sign peace deal

Afghanistan’s government has signed a peace deal with the Hezb–e-Islami militant group led by Gulbudin Hekmatyar. The deal was signed to bolster peace and national reconciliation in the war-torn country, with Hezb–e-Islami previously the second largest militant group in the country behind the Taliban. Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani signed the highly anticipated deal at a ceremony in the Presidential Palace, which was attended by officials and supporters of the Hezb-e-Islami militant group.
