Afghan Shiite Muslims mark Ashura Day

Afghan Muslims on Saturday observed the Day of Ashura, or the 10th day of Muhharam in the Islamic calendar, to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

Thousands of Shiite Muslim mourners were moving towards mosques and shrines in the Afghan capital of Kabul and other big cities to gather and mourn the day.

Groups of the mourners flagellated themselves with chains during the Ashura procession. Some others observed the day by donating blood to hospitals to pay homage to the late Imam Hussain.
