A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Chile on Wednesday, with a tsunami warning issued for several South American countries.
The quake with a magnitude of 8.4 occurred at 7:54 p.m. local time about 55 kilometers west of Illapel in central Chile at a depth of 20 km.
Several strong aftershocks have followed. The quake generated a tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and French Polynesia.
Chile’s government has urged residents to evacuate the coastline.
