Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, developed from earlier jihadist groups with their roots in Algeria’s brutal civil war of the 1990s. It has since evolved and expanded across the Sahel region south of the Sahara Desert, recruiting members from Mauritania, Morocco, Niger and Senegal. At least 23 people were killed nearby the Splendid Hotel in Burkina Faso on Friday night. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb group has claimed responsibility.
