Alleged gang fight leaves 17 dead in Guatemala jail

At least 17 inmates died after a riot allegedly broke out between rival incarcerated gangs in a prison in Guatemala’s southern department of Escuintla on November 29.
The good news was that no prisoners escaped the confinement, as security forces immediately took control of the jail located around 75 kilometers south of the capital of Guatemala City.
Official investigation was still continued on November 30, while local media reported that the riot might have happened after an escape attempt was intercepted by prison guards.
The prison in Escuintla has a capacity for 600 jailbirds, but at the time of the riot it was housing 2,092 prisoners.
