Deepa, a naturalized citizen of the United States, is bringing about winds of change in the village of Piyali in South 24-Parganas, West Bengal. Born and raised in Kolkata, she is the founder of of PACE Universal an organization that spearheads literacy and holistic village rehabilitation programs. Her brainchild, the Piyali Learning Centre, is set in a sprawling two-acre campus and home to 250 girls. The school runs classes from Nursery to Class X, exclusively for village girls. In a region infamous for child marriage and trafficking, the Piyali Learning Centre is giving hundreds of girls an opportunity to learn and grow. It also offers vocational training classes as well as adult literacy programmes for women.
