Antonio Guterres nominated as the new UN Secretary-General

The UN Security Council has unanimously nominated Antonio Guterres to be the next UN Secretary-General, with 13 of the 15 UN Security Council Members backing him during Thursday’s vote. The 193-member General Assembly is expected to meet next week to approve his appointment. 67-year-old Guterres served as Portugal’s Prime Minister from 1995 to 2002, and as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015. During his term in the UN, Guterres organized humanitarian aid to more than 40 million refugees in over 100 countries.
