ASEAN ministerial meeting downplays S. China Sea arbitration

The 49th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting is underway in Laos, and foreign ministers from the ASEAN member countries, as well as diplomats from dialogue partners like China and the US, are gathering in the country’s capital Vientiane. In a joint communique, ASEAN member countries promised to step up mutual trust and confidence in the South China Sea. However, it did not mention the tribunal ruling over maritime disputes in the region between China and the Philippines. Might this be ASEAN’s way of saying that it wants to further promote China-ASEAN relations?
