AskChina: China seeks peace or war?

In response to questions and concerns, CCTVNEWS invited Yang Xiyu, the senior fellow of the China’s Institute of International Studies, to discuss the South China Sea dispute and China’s peaceful solutions in these waters. According to Yang, China is absolutely seeking peaceful solutions. Yang raised the example of another potentially explosive incident between the Philipinnes and China dating back to 1999 to demonstrate how China approaches these types of issues. Seventeen years ago a Philippine warship was “stranded” on the Chinese reef called “Ren’ai Jiao”. The Philippine government claimed the ship was broken but it has served as a de facto military base on the reef, so that the soldiers can stay there and live there.
