The ultimate Go contest between Google’s AlphaGo and South Korea’s Lee Se-dol has been occupying the headlines for the past week. To the surprise of many, the AI program has already taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
Referring to the contest, Xu Jing, Director-General of the Department of Development Planning under China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, said that AlphaGo’s victory is the success of the development of big data, which can be further applied to other AI projects that benefit society.
For example, China is focusing on developing service robots that can communicate with human beings – the program could have major implications given the growing number of elderly people in the country.
