But in the Philippines, a country with one of the highest obesity rates in Asia, one competition has given plus-size women a venue to embrace and celebrate their weight. As Barnaby Lo reports, while the contest claims to encourage healthier living, the biggest reward for its contestants is social acceptance.
In Malaysia, a 29-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter has made a name of herself not just for beating opponents inside the ring. Ann ‘Athena’ Osman also defied conservative norms and gender stereotypes in her country by excelling in the traditionally male-dominated combat sport. Rian Maelzer tells us the story of a fighter who has become one of the poster girls of women’s MMA and raised its profile on the world stage.
