Assignment Asia Episode 49: Operation Drug War

The Philippines has seen more than 2,000 drug-related killings since President Rodrigo Duterte took office two months ago and declared a war against narcotics. Most of them were killed by unknown assailants, authorities say, while others died in shootouts with police.

The killings have drawn international attention and concern, but President Duterte and the country’s police chief have remained firm in their method of ridding the country of illegal drugs.

The debate over the country’s war to defeat the drug menace rages on, with supporters saying it has been effective in stamping out crime and critics arguing that it encourages vigilantism and extrajudicial killings.

CCTV’s Barnaby Lo takes us inside the Philippines’ war on drugs.
