At least 19 dead, two trapped in NW China coal mine accident

At least 19 people are confirmed dead after a coal mine accident in NW China’s Shaanxi Province on Saturday. A rescue mission for two trapped miners is underway.

There were 87 miners underground when a roof collapsed at the Lijiagou coal mine of the Baiji Mining Co., Ltd. in the city of Shenmu at around 4:30 p.m. After the accident, 66 of the miners were lifted to safety and 21 remained trapped.

Local authorities confirmed 19 of the trapped have died, and the search for the last two is still underway.
