Australian town blanketed by ‘hairy panic’ tumbleweed

The town of Wangaratta in Victoria, Australia has been blanketed by native tumbleweed known as “hairy panic,” which is believed to have originated in an untended paddock. Frustrated residents say they have spent hours every day clearing the weeds, with some piles reaching roofs at times. The town’s city council held an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the phenomenon and was reportedly considering sending in street sweepers armed with suction blowers.
