Austria presidential election: Van der Bellen narrowly beats Norbert Hofer

Alexander Van der Bellen, an independent candidate backed by the country’s Green Party, has narrowly defeated the Freedom Party’s Norbert Hofer. Had Hofer won the election, Austria would have become the first European Union country to elect a far-right head of state. It is thought the result will affect the country’s immigration policy.
