Brazil lives up to commitment to organize memorable Olympics and Paralympics

Thousands of people turned out on the last day of the Paralympics to help celebrate the successful conclusion of this year’s games in Rio. The mood along the city’s Olympic Boulevard was festive, as any initial doubts about Brazil’s ability to host the global sporting events had been proven wrong and were now a distant memory.

I think it was the recognition, because abroad everyone said that Brazil was too dangerous, that Rio de Janeiro would not be stable enough to host, but it turned out differently.

I liked the Olympics and the Paralympics as well, which were a joy for people suffering in times of crisis. The Paralympics is a heartwarming story of athletes who have experienced difficult situations and even discrimination.

We ended up slipping in the overall medals count. Despite getting the largest number of medals, we slipped. But it’s an evolving process and the legacy is not only physical. Brazil will improve its ranking for the next Paralympics and the world games going forward.

Brazil lived up to its commitment to organize memorable games, from the opening ceremony of the Olympics to the rousing closing of the Paralympics. For Brazilians and their guests from around the world, it was a promise well kept.
