When Brazil was awarded the right to host the 2016 Olympic Games, the country’s economy was booming and its then president Lula da Silva was an extremely popular figure in the country and around the world. As the games approach, though, the situation has taken a dramatic turn: Brazil is facing a severe recession and the incumbent president is running the risk of an impeachment.
