Brexit could signal serious consequences for Ireland

Britain is the Republic of Ireland’s biggest trading partner in the EU, with the Irish economy heavily dependent upon business with the UK. On June 23, Irish citizens resident in the UK are eligible to vote in the EU membership referendum, with the Irish government hoping that they will vote in support of the “Remain” campaign. Currently, there are no border controls between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, but there are fears of change should the UK vote to leave the EU.
