BRICS observation: Indian Internet innovators learn from China

China and India – two of the five BRICS members – share many similarities, ranging from large populations to economic scale. The two countries are also enjoying robust cooperation in Internet innovations.

Fresh data show that the number of Internet users in India reached 40 million last year, the world’s second highest only after China. Still, the number of smartphone users in India accounts for less than one ninth of the country’s population, which drives many tech developers to come up with more apps. Some of the developers have chosen to “copy from China” by creating apps similar to ones in wide use in China. Paytm, a payment app modeled on China’s Alipay, is one such example.
