Carrie Lam condemns U.S.-backed human rights act

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam has condemned the U.S. Congress for meddling in the city’s affairs. The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act was one of three pieces of legislation passed on Tuesday by U.S. lawmakers related to the Hong Kong protests. It requires the U.S. Secretary of State to certify every year that Hong Kong retained its autonomy in order to receive the special treatment that has allowed it to be a major financial hub. Beijing also opposed the U.S. move.
