China creates Rocket Force, nuclear strategy to remain consistent

China has created three new military units, a general command for the Army, a Rocket Force and a Strategic Support Force of the PLA.

When asked about the rocket force, a Chinese military spokesman says the unit’s establishment would not affect China’s nuclear strategy.

“China is committed to its no-first-use nuclear weapons policy and defensive nuclear strategy. China always keeps its nuclear capability at the minimum level required for safeguarding its national security. China’s nuclear policy and strategy are consistent, without any changes.”

Yang says the PLA Rocket Force, renamed from the PLA Second Artillery Force, will play an important role in safeguarding national security.

“The PLA Rocket Force will act as a core force of strategic deterrence, a strategic buttress to the country’s position as a major power, and an important building block in upholding national security. We will strive to build a strong and modern Rocket Force.”
President Xi Jinping conferred military flags to the three military units at an inauguration ceremony held in Beijing on Thursday.

Xi says the move to form new forces is to realize the Chinese dream of a strong military, and a strategic step to establish a modern military system with Chinese characteristics.
