China opens its own ‘Wimbledon’ tennis stadium, largest in Asia

China’s two-time Grand Slam winner Li Na attended an inaugural ceremony for a new stadium at the Wuhan Open in central China Sunday in front of cheers from her hometown fans.

Joined with the tournament’s defending champion Petra Kvitova, Li Na officially opened the 15,000-seat stadium costing more than 156 million U.S. dollars.

The stadium, similar in capacity to Wimbledon’s center court,is the biggest of its kind in Asia.

Earlier this year Li Na gave birth to her daughter and has made rare public appearances.
