China police seize smuggled endangered turtles

China’s border police have seized 31 endangered big-headed turtles in a routine check at China-Vietnam border.

The turtle mainly found in freshwarter areas in Southeast Asia and southern China is known to readily climb over obstacles in and around rivers and fast streams.

As it can not pull its head in its shell, it will not hesitate to use its powerful jaws to defend itself.

The turtle is frequently a market item in Asia, so it is rapidly disappearing in the wild.
