China sets up new military regions

Xi Jinping, chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), presented the flags to top officers of the five theater commands at a ceremony in Beijing on Monday.

Under the new structure, the five theater commands, including the north, south, east, west and central theater commands, replace the seven previous military commands.

During the inauguration ceremony, Xi called on the theater commands to keep their duties in mind and resolutely implement the country’s military strategies.

The president said under the new military structure, the CMC takes charge of the overall military administration while theater commands focus on combat and the different military branches pursue their own development.

Xi said the move is a landmark progress in carrying out the military reforms and building the PLA’s joint battle system.
