China slams Japan’s request for continental shelf

The Chinese Foreign Ministry says Japan’s request to claim the continental shelf and seabeds around the Okinotori reef is unreasonable and goes against international law. Spokesman Lu Kang said during a press conference Thursday afternoon that Japan’s attempt to claim the outer continental shelf by using the Okinotori reef had already been rejected by the UN’s Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in April 2012. He added that Japan continues to use Okinotori’s landmass above the sea surface during high tide, which is less than 10 square meters, to claim more than 700,000 square kilometers of waters, in order to occupy high seas and the international sea-bed area. It is damaging the common interests of the international community, Lu insisted.
