China to become world’s top carbon trader

China aims to roll out a national carbon emissions trading market in 2017, it is set to be the world’s largest scheme of its kind and help the world’s largest greenhouse emitter tackle climate change. Since 2013 China has set up pilot schemes in seven provinces and cities, covering over 1900 companies, and is already larger than many other national schemes. Carbon trading is when a government issues licenses to companies that allow them to emit a certain amount of CO2, capping the total amount of CO2 that is produced to the amount of licenses handed out.
