Chinese trade officials urged the European Union to uphold its World Trade Organization obligations on China’s market economy status. The Ministry of Commerce’s spokesman said on Friday that according to WTO rules, all members of the institution should recognize China as a market economy. The official said it is an obligation that supercedes any country or bloc’s internal rulings. The ministry’s remarks come after European Union lawmakers on Thursday overwhelmingly rejected any loosening of the bloc’s trade defenses against China, saying the country has yet to meet the EU’S five major criteria.
