China wins 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup bid

For the first time ever, the FIBA Basketball World Cup is coming to China.

SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH) HORACIO MURATORE, International Basketball Federation President:
“The host of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup is China.”

Both candidates – China and the Philippines, had submitted their bids and each gave presentations during the Host Announcement Ceremony.

The federation’s Central Board voted 14 in favor of China’s bid, with seven backing that of the Philippines.

Muratore said that the decision was a difficult one since both candidates did “excellent work.”

Yao Ming, ambassador for the China bid, said after the announcement that it’s an exciting moment to bring the game to China and millions of fans are sharing this joy with them.

“China has not only experience but also full support facilities. I believe new stars will appear in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.”

A total of eight Chinese cities, including Beijing, will co-host the FIBA flagship event.
