There is a new category of celebrity in China these days: the “Wang Hong,” who are famous for posting online videos or running an online clothing shop, which earns them thousands of followers on social media. The most popular stars can earn a fortune each year, making their career and lifestyle very alluring for many people. But is the phenomenon just a craze, or could it prove to be long lasting? CCTV’s Julian Waghann and Dr. Astrid Nordin, from the UK’s Lancaster University, examine what it takes to be a successful internet celebrity.
