China’s new envoy to Venezuela familiar with LatAm issues

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez on Tuesday received Chinese Ambassador Zhao Bentang, who just arrived in Caracas to take up his new position.

Prior to his current ambassadorship, Zhao served as the Deputy Director of the Latin American Department for the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

During the meeting, Rodriguez affirmed the “friendship and cooperation” prevailing between Caracas and Beijing and welcomed the appointment of the new ambassador in this South American nation, according to a press release issued by the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“It’s an honor to receive an ambassador who has handle China’s relations with Latin America,” said Rodriguez in reference to Zhao’s previous post at his ministry.

The Venezuelan Foreign Minister also stressed that the bi-national ties have transcended the diplomatic level and are supported by more than 445 agreements in strategic areas like energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology and education.

Zhao Bentang succeeded Zhao Rongxian, who upon his departure in June was awarded the Order of Francisco de Miranda by President Nicolas Maduro to highlight his work in strengthening the bilateral relations.
