Chinese people now interested less on medal table, more on the athletes and their stories

It seems that Chinese people’s attitudes towards gold medals are changing significantly at the Rio Olympics. The public used to care deeply about China’s ranking in the medal table, but this year, people seem to care more about the individual stories of the athletes. However, China still maintains a whole-nation sports system, which cost over 6 billion US dollars last year. Most funding comes from the government. Many are still saying that winning gold is the most important task because the athletes have been trained with huge amounts of taxpayer money. What’s your opinion?
