Chinese ship inaugurates expanded Panama Canal

Early morning June 26, the container vessel COSCO Shipping Panama from China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited made history by being the first ship to sail down the expanded Panama Canal.

Entering the Agua Clara Lock in the city of Colon on the Atlantic side of the new third lane of the canal, the vessel was pulled by four tugboats to mark the official opening, and will exit the Cocoli Lock in Panama City on the Pacific side hours later.

The 299.99-meter-long container vessel with a capacity of 9,443 TEUs was thus recorded in the international shipping history, by marking the conclusion of a nine-year expansion project of the canal that connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
