Clashes broke out between police and protesters today in Anantnag after Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was detained ahead of his scheduled anti-India rally. Protesters pelted stones on police and paramilitary personnel deployed in the area. Police then used aerial gun shots to disperse the protesters. Geelani had announced to offer Friday prayers in Anantnag and was scheduled to address a public gathering there after the prayers. The separatist leader continues to be under house arrest since his arrival from New Delhi on April 15 this year barring on two occasions – first when he was allowed to go to Tral to address a rally on May 1 and then on June 5 when he visited Passport Office in Anantnag for filing his passport application.
