Costa Rican diplomat Christiana Figueres was declared to enter the race to become United Nations Secretary General on July 7 in San Hose.

“The great injustice of this century, which we would be responsible, is that the social and economic pressure will continue to focus on the most vulnerable, and today we have one billion food-insecure, with degraded land without portable water.”
Figueres’ candidacy was supported officially by the Costa Rican government during an event at the National Theater of San Jose, with numerous ministers and luminaries in attendance.

Figueres was already seen as among the favourites to succeed Ban Ki-moon, who will finish his term in office at the end of this year.
The experienced diplomat led the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change from 2010 to its successful completion in 2015.
