Craftsman in China: Creating the art on China’s banknotes

To mark International Labor Day, CCTV NEWS is airing a series called “Passing on Traditions: Craftsman in China”. The first episode looks at engraving, in particular, for currency plates.  It may be the most painstaking task a visual artist can take on, the money we use every day depends on it. There’s no room for error. The film profiles the work of China’s foremost engraver, Ma Rong. Her works include the current version of the 100-yuan note with its depiction of Chairman Mao. There are only slightly more than a dozen people in China now engaged as engravers for paper currency. Ma Rong is fostering the fifth generation. Take a look at how a paper currency engraver works.
