Cross-Straits relations: Demonstrators urge Tsai to recognize 1992 Consensus

Demonstrators have gathered near where Tsai Ing-wen was inaugurated appealing her to recognize the 1992 Consensus. The demonstrators included representatives from some of the island’s organizations. Chang An-lo, president of the China Unionist Party, said the essence of the 1992 Consensus is that both sides of the Straits belong to one China. Chang called on Tsai and the Democratic Progressive Party to shed their elusive approach to the 1992 Consensus, and to change their stance on “Taiwan independence.” Some other participants expressed concern that cross-Straits exchanges and cooperation might suffer and Taiwan’s economy can be affected.
