This July marks the 70th anniversary of the Potsdam Proclamation. It is a document issued by China, the United States and Britain on July 26, 1945 demanding Japan’s unconditional surrender in World War Two. It was accepted by Japan in the 1945 Japanese Instrument of Surrender. However conservative forces in Japan recently made the most significant overturn of its surrender agreements.Represented by Abe’s administration, Japan overturned its “purely defensive” military posture, a condition of Japan’s surrender.George Batts is the former secretary general of Normandy Veterens’ Association.
