Death toll reaches 270 in India’s heaviest rains in 100 years

The number of deaths in the worst rains to hit India’s southern Chennai state rose to about 270 on Thursday as the deluges actually eased up. More than three million people have been cut off from basic services because of the rain. The army has so far evacuated 18,000 people from rooftops and outlying villages.
