China oil giant Sinopec has come under burning criticism after a video showed one of its self-service filling station charging customers without pumping fuel.
The video, which was recorded by a man at a Beijing branch on Wednesday, shows the meter of the pump dispenser running after he inserted his credit card. However, not a single drop came out of the nozzle.
The man’s request for refund was rejected by the staff members at the station.
The video soon caused a commotion on Chinese social media, and triggered backlash from netizens who asked the company for an explanation.
Sinopec later responded on its official account on China’s Twitter-like Weibo, claiming the incident was an isolated case which resulted from technical problems that affected the proper work of the fuel dispenser.
The Beijing-based company also said it had contacted the man, apologized for the inconvenience and refunded him.
