Nearly all public schools were closed for a second straight day in Detroit on Tuesday. It came after about 1,500 teachers called in sick to protest over the news that the cash-strapped school system will run out of money to pay employees after the fiscal year ends on June 30. Detroit’s public school system with nearly 46,000 students has been under state control since 2009 because of a financial emergency.
