Diplomat: Putin’ s visit to China to enhance ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay a state visit to China on June 25.

Chinese Ambassador to Russia Li Hui said the visit will inject new impetus to the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination.

He said the relations between Russia and China is the best in history.

During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s official visit to China in May 2014, the two sides signed a 30-year gas supply contract that will see the East-Route Pipeline start providing China with 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from 2018.

In November the same year, the two countries reached a framework agreement on the West-Route Pipeline project.

Li said he believes that the two countries will promote steady growth of bilateral trade, create new engines for economic innovation and new areas of cooperation.

SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) LI HUI, Chinese Ambassador to Russia:
“We believe that the bilateral trade volume could reach 100 billion U.S. dollars as the two leaders have pledged. We are confident that the volume will reach 200 billion dollars in 2020.”

Li said China and Russia are two important member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, or SCO.

He said the two countries will continuously strengthen good neighborly ties and political trust with the other participants.

According to Li, Beijing and Moscow play a constructive role in the development of the 15-year-old SCO to enhance its international position and influence.

Currently, the group’s primary task is the pairing of China’s Belt and Road initiative with the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union.

Li said the idea has been agreed by both leaders in order to promote the economic development of the SCO states and guarantee the future prosperity of their peoples.

SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) LI HUI, Chinese Ambassador to Russia:
“I think, under the framework of the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, the SCO member states could promote the development and cooperation in economy and trade and cultural exchanges.”

Li also said the SCO has become a model for regional and international cooperation.

The diplomat added that the Treaty on Long-Term Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation signed by the SCO member states implemented in legal form the concept of friendly ties.

Li noted that the SCO acts as a positive force to ensure security, stability and sustainable development worldwide.
