Discussion: China-Czech ties amid Xi’s visit

President Xi Jinping has begun a 3-day trip to the Czech Republic, marking the first visit to the country by a Chinese head of state in 67 years. Two-way trade between the countries topped 11 billion USD in 2015, and the Czech Republic has made its aims clear to turn its capital city of Prague into a financial, aviation and cargo center on China’s Belt & Road initiative. What industries are driving businesses between the two countries, and how far can we expect China-Czech ties to develop in the coming years? What role might people-to-people exchanges play between the countries? And how will the Czech Republic’s position in Central & Eastern Europe drive China’s relations in the region? Join us for a chat with Mr. Cui Hongjian, director of the Department for European Studies at the China Institute of International Studies; Mr. Jan Kohout, the Adviser to the President of the Czech Republic and the President of the New Silk Road Institute Prague; and Mr. Roderic Wye, Associate Fellow of the Asia Program at Chatham House.
