Discussion: China joins ASEAN and partners in joint drill

China has teamed up with Southeast Asian countries for a joint navy drill to deepen ties and boost security in the region, as defense ministers of ASEAN and its partner countries hold talks in Brunei. The joint navy drill involves all ten ASEAN countries, and eight partner countries, including China, Russia and the United States. Some say the drill is a sign of easing tensions in the South China Sea, now a hotspot for potential regional conflicts. But will it work? Zhu Chenghu, a Chinese military expert, Lim Tai Wei of the National University of Singapore, and Michael O’Hanlon of the Brookings Institution discuss the situation.
