Surrogacy is banned in China, but the practice remains widespread despite a recent crackdown by the government. As Chinese legislators mull reform of the Family Planning Law, the future of surrogacy is an issue generating considerable controversy. While it has the potential to help a huge number of couples, many are wary of so-called ‘commodification’ of women’s bodies and of the babies themselves.
